White Velvet (Latin name: Tradescantia sillamontana), also called Cobweb Spiderwort, White Gossamer Plant, White Velvet, belongs to Anatipodiaceae. White Velvet is a perennial fleshy herb, tuft plant, with erect or slightly creeping stems, 15 ~ 20 cm high, short fleshy stems hard and straight, covered with thick white long hair. White Velvet is suitable for a warm, moist environment and sufficient and soft sunshine, resistance to half shade and drought, not cold, avoid hot sun exposure and basin soil water.

Morphological features of white velvet


White Velvet is a fleshy perennial herb. Plants are tufted, stems erect or slightly prostrate, 15-20 cm tall, short fleshy stems stiff and straight, covered with thick white long hair.


Leaves of White Velvet are alternate, green or brownish green, slightly fleshy, ovate, leaves ca. 2 cm long and 1 cm wide, also covered with dense white fur.


The floret of White Velvet (Tradescantia Sillamontana) was lavender-pink, rising from the top of the stem.

Ecological habits of White Velvet

White Velvet is suitable for a warm and humid environment and sufficient and soft sunshine. It can withstand semi-shade and drought, but not cold. White Velvet should avoid hot sun exposure and water accumulation in basin soil.

White Velvet grew at an appropriate temperature of 16 ~ 24℃, under which the plant could be preserved in a place with bright light and no direct sunlight.

How to grow and care for white velvet


White Velvet (Tradescantia Sillamontana) keeps the soil moist in the growing period without accumulating water. When the air is dry, clean water can be used to spray the plants and the surrounding ground, but the water can not stay on the leaves for a long time, otherwise it will cause the leaves to rot. Apply decayed thin liquid fertilizer or compound fertilizer once a month, but the amount of fertilizer should not be much, so as not to overgrow the stem and leaves so that the plant shape is messy.

Summer high temperature can be appropriate shading, and strengthen ventilation, otherwise due to stuffy, damp lead to plant decay.
