Pontederia Cordata is a perennial fresh water or wet herb with a green, cylindrical petiolate, large leaves up to 25 cm long and 15 cm wide, dark green and variable leaf shape. Most of them are ovate-lanceolate, about 10-20 cm long.Scapes erect with two yellow-green spots on each of the upper petals, usually rising above the leaves. Rhizome is a fringed adventitious root, 15-30 cm long, with numerous root hairs. Underground stem is stout, yellow-brown, with eyes, ground stem leaves clumpy, plant height 80-150 cm. Petiole  is green, cylindrical, cross-cut mask membranous. Leaf blade is smooth, olive-colored, ovate-lanceolate. Leaf base is broadly cordate, apex acuminate. Spikes are terminal, 5-20 cm long, more than 200 florets dense, bluish purple with yellow spots, ca. 10 mm in diam., 6 perianth lobes, suborbicular, lobes basically connate to tubular. The fruit is green at the beginning and brown at maturity. Pericarp is hard, seeds elliptic, 1-2 mm in diameter. Flowering period is from May to October.
