Oxalis is native to Europe and North Africa and is cultivated throughout the world. Australia, New Zealand, The United Kingdom, Denmark and the Netherlands are the countries with the most forage grass varieties. Breeders in other countries, such as Sweden, Germany, the United States, France, Italy, Canada and Poland have also produced many famous varieties. 

Wild and cultivated species are found as far south as Mengla County in Yunnan province and Shangzhi County in Heilongjiang Province in the north.
