Teucrium japonicum is an erect perennial herb with a height of 50-125 cm. Teucrium japonicum stem's lower part is glabrous, upper edges and nodes with downward hairs. Leaves of Teucrium japonicum are ovate-oblong, 2-11.5 cm long and 1-5.5 cm wide, short hairs on both veins; Petiole length below the beginning of leaf blade. Pseudospicate is glabrous; Bracts are linear-lanceolate; Corolla is white or dark red, corolla tube full length I/4, without hair ring. Nutlets are connected to more than one half of the fruit.
The whole grass of Teucrium japonicum is 10-20cm long. The rhizome is elongated like silkworm, fleshy, about 3mm in diameter, grayish yellow on the surface, longitudinal wrinkles, obvious nodes, visible residual membranous or dried into hairy leaf sheaths. Roots are short, slightly stout, covered with fine villous root hairs. Leaves are alternate, papery, much convolved, oval after flattening, 2 -- 5cm long, 1 -- 2cm wide, grayish green or dark red;Petiole elongated membranous sheath, clasping stem. The gas is slight, the taste is light and slightly astringent.
Teucrium japonicum is commonly found on the rocky surface in the damp places by the side of high mountains and rivers. The Lotus of Ishigami is found on the rock, with an elevation of 200-400 meters.
Teucrium japonicum is widely used in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangdong, Zhenjiang and Changshu. Most of them are produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, southeast Jiangxi and southwest Hunan.
